Health Tip: If You're Tired of Walking

7/21/2009 (HealthDay News) -- Walking is a great form of exercise -- you can burn calories, yet it's fairly easy on your feet and joints.

But if you're bored with your walking routine, the American Podiatric Medical Association offers these low-impact alternatives:

Take a swim, or sign up for a water aerobics class.
Take a dance class.
Sign up for an aerobics, Pilates or yoga class.
Hop on a bike and start pedaling, whether it's outdoors or on a stationary bike.
Use an elliptical machine.
Work out with some light weight lifting.
Remember the fun of childhood; exercise with a hula-hoop or jump rope.

TUESDAY, Aug. 11 (HealthDay News) -- Losing a lot of weight rejuvenates the physical structure of the heart, and it makes no difference whether the weight is lost by surgery or by dieting, a new British study shows.

The heart muscles of people who started with a body mass index (BMI) averaging 40 -- a BMI of 30 is the usual marker of obesity -- became noticeably thinner and more efficient when they brought their BMI down to 32.2 in a single year, according to a report in the Aug. 18 issue of the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.

"Both diet and bariatric surgery led to comparable, significant decreases" in heart structure abnormalities and malfunction, the University of Oxford researchers reported.

Bariatric surgery is designed to induce weight loss by reducing the amount of food people can eat, the amount of food they can metabolize or both.

Weight loss averaging 21 kilograms (about 45 pounds), achieved by the 37 obese people in the study, "is typically what is seen after bariatric surgery," said Dr. Philip R. Schauer, director of the Cleveland Clinic Bariatric and Metabolic Institute.

Noting that many of the obese people lost those kilograms by eating less, Schauer called it "quite unusual for someone to diet with that effect. These were a very special subset."

And the problem with weight loss by diet is that "weight regain is the norm, whereas with bariatric surgery there is ample evidence that the weight loss is maintained," Schauer said.

The Oxford researchers used cardiac MRI, a special X-ray technique, to obtain detailed information on the structure of the hearts not only of the 37 obese participants but also of 20 normal-weight volunteers, whose average BMI was 21. They found that the walls of the left and right ventricles, the blood-pumping chambers of the heart, were significantly thicker in the obese people. They also found impaired ability of the heart to hold blood at diastole, the resting point of the heartbeat, in the obese.

A year later, after weight loss, the heart muscles of the obese people were less overgrown and the hearts could also hold more blood. Thickening of the aorta, the main heart artery, was also greatly reduced after weight loss.

"These findings provide a potential mechanism for the reduction in mortality seen with weight loss," the researchers wrote.

And it thus helps explain something of a medical mystery -- why people who are grossly overweight are more at risk of heart attack and sudden death than their numbers show, said Dr. Christine Ren, a bariatric surgeon who is an associate professor of surgery at New York University Langone Medical Center.

"Most of them say they are pretty healthy, maybe with a slight elevation of blood pressure, but when you really drill down to it you can show an abnormal cardiac function," Ren said. "The point is that their heart is not normal and that already is having a negative effect on their health."

Losing weight by dieting is desirable, "but the problem with diets is that statistics show maintenance of weight loss by diet is extremely difficult and quite rare," Ren said.

Bariatric surgery is expensive, costing anywhere from $15,000 to $25,000, she said, and it is not perfect. "There is always going to be 5 percent of these people who gain most of their weight back, but it still is the best chance of having significant weight loss," Ren said.

However, health insurance coverage of bariatric surgery is uncertain, varying from company to company and state to state, she said, and many plans are starting to put more limits on coverage.

High blood pressure may lead to 'silent' strokes

ST. PAUL, Minn. - "Silent" strokes, which are strokes that don't result in any noticeable symptoms but cause brain damage, are common in people over 60, and especially in those with high blood pressure, according to a study published in the July 28, 2009, print issue of Neurology??, the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology (see also American Academy of Neurology).

"These strokes are not truly silent, because they have been linked to memory and thinking problems and are a possible cause of a type of dementia," said study author Perminder Sachdev, MD, PhD, of the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia. "High blood pressure is very treatable, so this may be a strong target for preventing vascular disease."

The study involved 477 people age 60 to 64 who were followed for four years. At the beginning of the study 7.8 percent of the participants had the silent lacunar infarctions, small areas of damage to the brain seen on MRI that never caused obvious symptoms. They occur when blood flow is blocked in one of the arteries leading to areas deep within the brain, such as the putamen or the thalamus. By the end of the study, an additional 1.6 percent of the participants had developed "silent" strokes.

People with high blood pressure were 60 percent more likely to have silent strokes than those with normal blood pressure. Also, people with another type of small brain damage called white matter hyperintensities were nearly five times as likely to have silent strokes as those without the condition.

Fatty Acids in Diet Linked to Bowel Disease Risk

THURSDAY, July 23 (HealthDay News) -- Consuming too much of a common polyunsaturated fatty acid could be a contributing factor in an estimated 30 percent of all cases of ulcerative colitis, researchers say.

In a new study, participants who had the highest intake of linoleic acid had more than double the chance of developing the painful inflammation and blistering of the bowels as did those whose diet contained the least of the acid. The report is published online in Gut.

Red meat and some cooking oils and margarines are among the many dietary sources of linoleic acid.

However, the research also found that consuming lots of omega 3 fatty acids can cut the chance of developing ulcerative colitis by more than three quarters. Oily fish such as salmon and mackerel, flaxseed and certain dairy products are rich in omega 3, also known as docosahexanoic acid.

The European study, which looked at the dietary habits of more than 200,000 people in five countries, found that ulcerative colitis occurred about equally in men and women and at an average age of 60. The data analysis took into account other possible causes of the condition, including smoking, age, caloric intake and aspirin use.

The body converts linoleic acid to arachidonic acid, a component of the cell membranes in the bowel, and it then can turn into various chemicals that inflame tissue, according to information in a news release from the journal's publisher. People with ulcerative colitis have been found to have high levels of these chemicals in their bowel tissue.

Having ulcerative colitis, which is a chronic condition, puts a person at a higher risk of developing bowel cancer.

One-third of cancer deaths preventable

HOUSTON, Aug 7, 2009 (UPI via COMTEX) -- If people ate healthier meals and increased daily exercise 186,000 cancer deaths, one-third of the annual U.S. total, could be prevented, an expert says.

Michele Forman of the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston says there are low cost ways to to prevent cancer.

"Cancer is a disease that is cheaper to prevent than treat," Forman says in a statement.

Forman admits eating five or more servings of fruits and veggies can be costly and advises checking out a list of farmers' markets and eligibility for nutrition assistance at www.usda.gov.

Forman suggests cancer risk can by reduced by:

-- Avoiding tobacco. Quitting saves up to $4,000 a year. Free programs and/or information are available at Web sites: mdanderson.org/preventionstudy; smokefree.gov; and yesquit.com.

-- Being sun-safe. Use sunglasses and sunscreen at least sun-protection factor 15 can be almost as good as more expensive SPF 70, if applied and reapplied properly.

-- Getting checkups so cancers are found early when most treatable. Some states offer free or low-cost screening. Call 1-800 4-CANCER.

Elderly who are single suffer cognitively

LOS ANGELES, Aug 7, 2009 (UPI via COMTEX) -- U.S. researchers suggest seniors who survive a spouse or never marry seem to suffer more cognitive decline.

However, socioeconomic status did not seem to be linked to brain's continued ability to function.

Lead investigator Dr. Arun Karlamangla of the University of California, Los Angeles Geffen School of Medicine, said the study is based on data from 6,476 adults born prior to 1924, who were tested five times between 1993-2002 on various memory and cognition items.

The study, published in the American Journal of Epidemiology, found rates of cognitive decline over a 9-year period were similar across socioeconomic and racial and ethnic groups.

"It has been known that cognitive performance at any given age appears to depend on demographic characteristics; the more educated, for instance, perform better," Karlamangla said in a statement.

"But though there are differences in the level of performance you start with in your late 60s, this study's surprise is that the rate of decline in your 70s is the same for every group."

Mounting evidence of fish body oil benefit

NEW ORLEANS, Aug 4, 2009 (UPI via COMTEX) -- Omega-3 fatty acids may reduce the incidence of cardiac events and mortality in patients with existing heart disease, U.S. researchers said.

"We now have tremendous and compelling evidence from very large studies, some dating back 20 and 30 years, that demonstrate the protective benefits of omega-3 fish oil in multiple aspects of preventive cardiology," lead author Dr. Carl Lavie, medical director of Cardiac Rehabilitation and Prevention, Ochsner Medical Center in New Orleans, said in a statement.

"The strongest evidence of a cardioprotective effect of omega-3s appears in patients with established cardiovascular disease and following a heart attack with up to a 30 percent reduction in cardiovascular-related death."

Dietary intake of fish oil can also decrease the risk of atherosclerosis, arrhythmias, heart attack, sudden cardiac death and even health failure, Lavie said.

The review, published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, said based on the findings, the study authors recommend that healthy individuals should consume 500 mg daily of omega-3 fish oil containing docosahexaenoic acid and eicosapentaenoic acid and people with known heart disease or heart failure aim for at least 800 to 1,000 mg daily.
